Description

Mount Kenya National Park offers a breathtaking landscape featuring unique flora, rugged peaks, and glaciers. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya provides abundant wildlife sightings, numerous high-altitude tarns, and classic mountain peaks. The experience is often more serene and scenic, with fewer crowds and smaller groups ascending, allowing for a more intimate connection with nature. Many visitors ascend and descend the mountain without encountering anyone other than the Kenya Wildlife Service staff at park gates and camps.

From the moment you arrive in Africa, this journey will feel like a unique adventure waiting to unfold. It is more about experiencing the journey than just taking it. This trip is perfect for those who love the highlands but may not be able to hike or climb at high altitudes, or for mountain enthusiasts who are short on time. Mount Kenya is also unique as it is the only mountain situated directly on the equator. During this trip, you will have the opportunity to cross the equator and witness this extraordinary phenomenon firsthand.

The Itinerary

Begin your journey heading northeast, crossing the equator and covering a distance of 150 km from Nairobi. The closest towns to Mount Kenya are Nanyuki and Karatina, surrounded by lush tea and coffee farms. Upon arrival at the Sirimon Gate, you will check in and start a leisurely 3-hour, 9 km hike. Enjoy the stunning scenery of Mount Kenya's Sirimon forest, featuring bamboo groves, heather zones, and rockwood trees. Along the way, you may spot wildlife such as elephants, buffalos, various bird species, waterbucks, and giraffes. After about 3 hours, you'll reach the first camp, Old Moses, at an altitude of 3,320 meters on the Sirimon route. Spend the evening exploring the nearby peaks or relaxing at the camp. Dinner will be served at the camp.

Starting early in the morning after breakfast, hike from Old Moses Camp (3,320m) to Mackinder's Valley Rock Junction (3,700m), testing your fitness as you ascend over 400 meters. This altitude showcases unique vegetation, such as giant groundsels and lobelias, characteristic of Mount Kenya's equatorial mountain forest. After your trek, descend back to the base and drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
